To thoroughly assess gastrointestinal issues, Cooper Clinic's gastroenterology services include colonoscopy and endoscopy.
Colonoscopy allows the physician to examine the entire large intestine to check for early signs of cancer and other gastrointestinal issues. Traditional or virtual colonoscopy is recommended every five years beginning at age 40 to 50 unless otherwise recommended by your physician.
Endoscopy enables the physician to look inside the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (first part of the small intestine) to uncover reasons for swallowing difficulties, nausea, vomiting, reflux, bleeding, indigestion, abdominal pain, or chest pain.
Because of the preparation needed, these procedures cannot be performed on the same day as the comprehensive exam. An appointment can be made for the day following the exam or at a more convenient time.
